台灣目前已經步入高齡化社會，隨著人口老化人數逐漸增長，有關失智的議題也越來越受到重視。

當我們逐漸老化時，身體的各個器官衰弱、記憶力變差，但是正常老化不會讓記憶越來越衰退，而失智症卻會使人的記憶逐漸地、漸進地、持續性的遺失。
曾經歷過的事，經提醒也想不起來，隨著腦部受損情況和受損區域，失智長輩有時也會做出讓人難以理解、失控的事，情緒也會隨著身體狀況、環境變動起伏不定、憂鬱不安和焦慮，而身體功能也會隨著時間慢慢變差甚至是失能。

最令人害怕的是未知的恐懼

每個人在面對未曾經歷過的事情時，多少都會感到緊張、有壓力，第一次上學、第一次工作、第一次交往、第一次生病住院……，而失智症的情況所需面對的壓力更是讓失智患者和家屬不安。

    

89歲的書法爺爺，以前是位老師，在失智之後來到日間照顧中心。書法爺爺有點重聽，需要透過紙筆書寫溝通，平時很喜歡日照中心的課程，上靜態課時，特別能樂在其中。書法爺爺寫了一手好書法，在繪畫時，很有想像力，像是在山水畫中自行加上火車，安靜溫柔的書法爺爺，在和老師們互動時，會開心地哼起歌。

社工提到書法爺爺有段時間因身體不適，住院插管治療，當度過危機，身體情況較穩定後，書法爺爺跟家人不斷地要求要回來日照中心上課。

書法爺爺說：「我喜歡在這裡上課。」

書法爺爺雖然很少用言語表達想法和感受，但在日常課程中，只要多用心就能觀察出他的喜好跟情緒，而這也是甘霖基金會引以為傲之處。
